GARRETT SCALES Aerosol Artist Stenciled Portraits Exhibition October 9 - October 31, 2009
Garrett Scales was born in South Carolina but did most of his growing up in Florida. After a family move in 1995, he now calls Raleigh home.
Garrett is a self-taught artist and after discovering the process of stenciling he began to create his entire body of work from hand cut stencils and spray paint. Since 2003 his works typically depicted pop culture icons of the hip hop world. As he moved on, he chose to depict other American icons for various aesthetic reasons and to capture a moment in time.
Now he is beginning to shape his work to follow the lines and flaws of the human face to give more feeling to the overall work. Sometimes the subject is aggressive and needs to be explained more, or the subject was caught almost as if in a dream and must be given an imaginative presence.
In this exhibition, Garrett Scales will explore the themes and elements of El Dia de los Muertos through the eyes and faces of Mexican icons. It is his hope that the viewer walks away from his interpretation and develops one of their own.
